Description

Cavenilo, a travertine wall light that swivels

Cavenilo sets a piece of yellow travertine on a round walnut base, joined by a short black swivel. The stone is pitted and irregular, and each head carries markings of its own. Turn the head to throw the light down the wall or onto an open book. A cord runs from the base to a standard outlet, and an inline switch handles on and off, with nothing to wire in. The fitting takes an LED or Edison bulb, in whatever warmth you like.

Where to put it

Put it on the wall beside the bed and the light falls onto your book. It also works over a chair in a reading nook. A hallway wall is fine as long as an outlet sits within reach of the 59 in (150 cm) cord. Indoor only, and not for a wet spot.

How to install

Cavenilo goes on the wall and runs from an outlet, so nothing connects to your house electrics.

What you need: an outlet within reach of the cord.

Pick a spot on the wall where an outlet sits within reach of the 59 in (150 cm) cord.
Hold the sconce against the wall at the height you want and mark where the round base sits.
Mount the base on the wall at that spot.
Fit an E26 or E27 bulb, LED or Edison.
Plug the cord in and switch the lamp on at the cord.
Turn the head on its swivel until the light falls where you want it.

Good to know

There is no dimmer on the cord, so the level of light comes down to the bulb you fit.
Travertine is natural stone, so the pits and markings on your head will not match another one exactly.

What makes it good

It runs from an outlet you already have, so a bedside wall or a hallway gets light without an electrician.
Light lands on your book by the bed or up the wall in a reading corner, wherever the swivel head points it.
An inline switch on the cord turns the light on and off.
Travertine and walnut bring stone and wood into a bedroom or living room, and the pitting on the head differs from one piece to the next.
Fit an LED or an Edison bulb and the warmth and the brightness are your choice.

NO WIRING TO RUN

The sconce runs from a standard outlet on its own cord, so putting it up does not touch the house wiring. There is no junction box to cut in and no circuit to run.

The round walnut base sits flat on the wall, with the travertine head angled above it on a short black swivel.

SWIVEL IT DOWN FOR READING

The head turns on its swivel, so the light can point down the wall or across an open book instead of out into the room.

Aimed down, it lays a pool of light over the open book on the bed. Turn the head back toward the wall and the same light falls behind the bed instead.

FITS A NARROW WALL

At 3.9 in (10 cm) across and 9.4 in (24 cm) high, it needs only a slim piece of wall. A strip beside a doorway, or the pier between a window and a corner, is enough wall for it.

The walnut base fixes flat to the wall and the travertine head angles above it on a short black swivel, so the light comes from a spot too narrow for a floor lamp or a shelf.

Common questions

Does it need wiring or an electrician?

No. It runs from a standard outlet on its own cord and you switch it on at the cord, so nothing joins your house electrics.

How does it attach to the wall?

The round walnut base mounts on the wall and the travertine head sits above it on a short black swivel.

Can I change the direction of the light?

Yes. The head turns on its swivel, so you can point the light down the wall, onto a book or across a corner of the room.

What bulb does it take?

An E26 or E27 bulb, LED or Edison, and the sconce runs on AC 110 to 240 V. The bulb you choose decides how warm and how bright the light is.

Is it dimmable?

There is no dimmer on the power cord, so the sconce itself does not dim. What you can change is the bulb you fit.

What is it made of?

A yellow travertine head on a walnut wood base, joined by a black metal swivel. Travertine is a natural stone, so the pitting and the markings vary from piece to piece.

How big is it?

It is 3.9 in (10 cm) across and 9.4 in (24 cm) high, so it needs only a slim piece of wall.

Can it go in a bathroom?

It is made for indoor use and it is not waterproof, so keep it out of a bathroom. A bedroom or hallway wall suits it.
