What counts as small
Height decides it. Up to 21 inches (53 cm) is small; under roughly 12 inches (30 cm) is mini. A lamp can be short and still wide, though, so look at both numbers on the product page, where the maker lists them, before you order.
Where a small lamp works
The nightstand. There is still room for your book, your water and your phone. Turn the light down low and warm at bedtime.
Shelves and bookcases. Tuck a mini lamp between books. The shelf suddenly looks lived in, and the things around it catch the light.
The desk corner. A compact lamp beside the monitor softens the glare of the screen in the evening and leaves the desk clear.
Windowsills, consoles and entryways. A little light in the window or by the front door is a nice thing to come home to.
Cordless or plug-in
You get both kinds in small sizes. Rechargeable ones run on their battery after charging, so a shelf with no outlet is no problem; you will find those on our cordless table lamps page too. Plug-in lamps never need charging and can stay on all evening, as long as the cord reaches the wall. Some run off a USB cable from a laptop or a phone charger. Check the power line on the product page; it says which, where the manufacturer states it.
What light to expect
Think pool of light, not room light. A small lamp sets a mood, marks a corner and makes the evening feel slower. For long reading, pick one whose shade points the light down at the page, or keep the ceiling light on as well.
Many small lamps switch on with a touch and dim right down, and some swap between warm and cool white. The Dimming and Light color lines on the product page tell you what a lamp can do.
Size it to the table
Photos of a single lamp make it look bigger than it is. Get the tape measure out, measure the surface, and compare with the height and width listed. On a nightstand, a lamp that reaches about the top of the mattress, or a bit above, tends to look right. On a shelf, leave some air above it so the light can spread.
Shapes in small sizes
Domed mushroom lamps, glass globes, candle-style lamps, figurines that light up, and shrunk-down versions of the classic lamp with a shade. The domed ones also have a page of their own: mushroom table lamps. To see every size and style together, go to our table lamps.
