How glass changes the light
Clear glass lets the light straight through, so you see the bulb and get a bright, sparkling look. Frosted or opal glass spreads the light evenly and hides the bulb, which gives a soft glow that is easy on the eyes. Tinted glass in amber, smoke or blue warms or cools the room and looks good even when the lamp is off.
Stained glass
A stained glass shade is built from many small pieces of colored glass, each edged in copper foil and soldered together. Lit from inside, it fills the corner with patches of color, like a small window. Flowers and geometric patterns are the classic designs. The product page describes the pattern and the colors where the maker gives them.
Globes, domes and mushroom shapes
Globe shades. A round glass ball gives light in every direction and suits a shelf or a bedside.
Domes and mushroom shapes. A glass cap on a short stem sends the light down and out across the table. Some of these also sit on our mushroom table lamps page.
Glass with metal or wood
Some glass lamps sit on a metal stem and base, in chrome or gold, which keeps them stable and gives a cleaner line. Those are also on our metal table lamps page. Others pair glass with a wooden base for a warmer, softer look.
Power and bulbs
Some glass lamps plug into a wall outlet and take a standard bulb, some run from a USB cable, and some carry a rechargeable battery; the cordless ones are also on our cordless table lamps page. The power and light source lines on the product page say which, and whether a bulb is in the box, where the maker states it.
With a clear or lightly frosted shade, the bulb shows, so a warm white LED bulb looks best. An LED bulb also keeps the glass cooler than an old filament bulb.
Cleaning and care
Switch the lamp off and let it cool. Dust the glass with a soft, dry cloth, then wipe it with a slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away. Skip abrasive cleaners, which can scratch frosted or painted glass. Glass is fragile, so give the lamp a stable spot away from the edge of the table.
Where a glass lamp looks best
On a nightstand, a frosted shade gives a calm glow before sleep. On a console or a sideboard, a stained glass lamp becomes the piece people notice first. On a shelf, a small globe adds light and sparkle to books and objects. For every material and style, see all our table lamps.
