Blankets & Throws

Before color or pattern, a blanket comes down to two questions. Is it a throw for one person on the sofa, or a blanket big enough for a bed? And what is it made of? The fabric is what decides how warm it feels, how it hangs and how it washes. Settle those and you will find the grid gets short fast. Under it, we explain how to choose.

Size first: a throw or a blanket

Much of what is here is a throw. Think of it as about 50 by 60 inches, the size one person pulls over their legs on a sofa and then leaves folded over the arm. Put it on a bed and it lies across the foot as a layer. It will not cover the mattress, and it is not meant to.

Bed blankets are bigger: twin, queen or king, with enough fabric to hang down the sides. A few designs are sold in both sizes, so you can have the throw and the bed blanket in the same pattern. You will find the size on the product page in inches and centimeters, each size on its own line.

Trust the numbers over the photograph. Draped on a chair, a throw looks huge; spread on a king bed, a big blanket looks small. For a sofa, measure the seat. For a bed, measure the top of the mattress and add whatever drop you want on each side.

The fabrics, and what each one is like to live with

Sherpa. Short, curly pile, the kind you see lining a winter jacket, usually on the back of a smoother face. It is thick and it is warm. If the room runs cold, start here.

Faux fur. Longer pile, denser, with a bit of shine to it. Honestly, people buy it as much for how it looks folded on a chair as for using it.

Plush, flannel and fleece. Short pile on both sides. Warm without weighing much, happy in the washing machine, and the one that survives a family sofa. Our plush blankets and fleece blankets pages explain the different piles.

Knit. Yarn looped into stitches, anything from a fine cable to a chunky chenille. You buy a knit for the stitch. It hangs rather than lying flat, and a little air gets through. Knit throw blankets have a page of their own if you want to compare stitches and yarns.

Cotton and woven designs. The flat ones: cotton muslin, waffle weave, and woven blankets where the pattern is part of the cloth instead of printed on top. Lighter and cooler. These are what you reach for once spring comes. Cotton blankets puts the weaves side by side.

A word on labels. Where a product page has a material line, it is what the maker states, word for word. Polyester is called polyester, and we do not call anything wool or cashmere unless the maker does.

Warmth is the fabric, not a number

You will not see a warmth rating from us, because no maker publishes one for a throw that would mean anything. A rough order still helps: sherpa, faux fur and plush feel warmest, knits come next, and flat cotton and woven blankets feel coolest. Two layers beat one, so a knit face on a sherpa back is warmer than either would be alone.

Weight tells you something too. At the same size, the heavier blanket usually has thicker yarn or denser pile. If the maker gives a weight, it is on the product page, and the side-on photos show you the real thickness.

A throw for the sofa, a blanket for the bed

A throw on a sofa has two jobs. In the evening you use it. The rest of the day it sits folded over the arm and has to look like it belongs there. Pull a color from the cushions or the rug, or go one shade darker than the sofa, and it looks chosen rather than forgotten.

On a bed, a blanket can stand in for a duvet in a warm month or go on top of one in a cold one. A throw folded across the bottom third adds texture and a second color without hiding the bedding. A bed blanket spread flat should hang at least a hand's width over each side.

Patterns, colors and the Christmas designs

Many of these come in more than one color, and some are reversible, with another color or texture on the back. Every color you can pick on a product page has its own photographs, so the color you see is the one you get, not another color with a new name.

Christmas designs wear the season in the pattern: trees, snowflakes, gingerbread men, candy canes, reindeer, and those red and green checks that come out every December. A plain red or green blanket does not count. We photograph it in an ordinary room, and it will work in March just as well.

Washing and keeping a blanket nice

Check the Care tab on the product page; it has the instructions for that blanket. Pile and plush usually go in cold on a gentle cycle, then the dryer on low. Knits are less predictable. Plenty go in the machine on gentle, but some want a mesh bag, and some want to dry flat. If the maker gives no care instructions, the tab uses a careful default for that fabric.

Three small habits help any blanket last. Wash it alone, or with other soft things. Leave out fabric softener on pile fabrics, since it flattens them. And give it a good shake before it dries.

What we do not sell here

This page is ordinary throws and blankets. We do not sell heated, electric or weighted blankets, baby blankets or pet blankets, and you will not find licensed characters or brand logos. If that is what you are after, we would rather tell you now than sell you the wrong thing.

Before you order

Size: a throw for a person, or a blanket for a bed. Hold the inches on the product page up against your sofa or mattress.

Fabric: pile when you want warmth, knit when you want texture, cotton and woven for the warmer months. After that, pick the one you like looking at. That is the fun part.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a throw and a blanket?
Size and job. A throw is around 50 by 60 inches, made for one person on a sofa or a chair, and it covers a lap and the legs. A blanket is sized for a bed and hangs over the sides of the mattress. The product page gives the size in inches and centimeters.
Will a throw cover my bed?
No. A 50 by 60 inch throw is narrower than a twin mattress, so it lies across the foot of the bed as a layer rather than covering it. For a bed, look for a size listed as twin, queen or king, and compare the inches with the width of your mattress.
Which fabric is the warmest?
The pile fabrics: sherpa, faux fur and plush feel warmest, knits sit in the middle, and flat cotton and woven blankets feel coolest. We do not quote warmth ratings, because no maker publishes one that means anything for a throw.
Can these go in the washing machine?
Many can, cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dried low. Some knits want a mesh bag or drying flat. The Care tab on the product page gives the instructions for that blanket.
Is the material exactly what the page says?
Yes. The material line is the one the maker states, word for word. If it says polyester, it is polyester, and nothing is described as wool or cashmere unless the maker says so.
Are any of these reversible?
Some are, with a different color or texture on the back, such as sherpa behind a knit face. Where a blanket is reversible, the product page says so and shows the back.
Do you sell heated or weighted blankets?
No. We do not sell heated, electric or weighted blankets, and there are no baby or pet blankets here.
Will the color look like the photographs?
The photographs are taken in daylight, on a white background or in a bright room, so the color reads as close to the real fabric as a screen allows. Where a blanket comes in several colors, each color has its own photographs.
