Cimessa Plug-in Wall Sconce

$188.00

Hung beside the bed, it sends light down where you sit up at night, and your nightstand stays clear for a book and a glass of water. The textured shade looks good switched off too.

No electrician to book: it plugs into an outlet, so nothing gets wired in.
No reaching up to the lamp: the on and off switch sits on the cord.
Pick the glow you like: it takes your own LED or Edison style bulb.

Description

Cimessa, a plug-in sconce with hanging shade

A round wood backplate holds a metal arm in a dark finish, with the shade hanging from it on a cord. The ridged cement gray microcement shade closes over your own E26 or E27 bulb and sends the light down onto the surface below, with the bulb screened from above. Three shade shapes match the wall you have: the broad shallow cone of Model A, the middle cone of Model B and the narrow taper of Model D. It runs from an outlet and the inline switch turns it on and off.

Where to put it

Fix one on each side of the bed instead of nightstand lamps, wherever the cord reaches an outlet. Above an entryway console it lights the spot where keys and mail land, and in a living room it gives a chair its own light without a table lamp.

Backplate or base: round wall backplate in a wood finish

Control: inline on and off switch on the cord
Power: plugs into a wall outlet, AC 110 to 240 V
Mounting: round wall backplate, fixed with mounting hardware
Use: indoor, dry locations, IP20, not for bathrooms or damp rooms
In the box: fixture, bulb not included

How to install

The lamp runs from a wall outlet, so the work is fixing the round backplate to the wall and fitting your own bulb.

What you need: A bulb with an E26 or E27 base.

Pick the spot on a finished indoor wall where the cord will reach an outlet, and hold the lamp there to check the height.
Mark the fixing points through the round backplate and fix it to the wall.
Fit an E26 or E27 bulb into the socket.
Plug it into the outlet and switch the lamp on at the cord.

Good to know

The light leaves the shade downward, so the height you fix it at decides where the light lands.
Check where the switch on the cord will fall before you settle on a height.

What makes it good

A plain bedroom wall takes it at bed height, with no fitting to wire in.
You reach the switch on the cord rather than the fixture itself.
In a seating corner the light lands on the chair below.
A broad cone suits a console, a narrow taper a slim strip of wall by a bed.
A living room with no free table or floor space still gets a lamp.

Cimessa Plug-in Wall Sconce

$188.00

ONLY THE BACKPLATE GOES UP

The lamp takes its power from a standard wall outlet, and the round wood backplate is the only part fixed to the wall. The cord runs from the lamp to the plug, which sets how far from an outlet it can go.

Fixing that backplate to the wall with mounting hardware is the only work involved.

THE BULB SHOWS FROM BELOW

The socket takes an E26 or E27 bulb and none comes with the lamp, so you pick the one you want: a clear Edison style bulb for a visible filament, or an LED for everyday light. Swap it later and the same lamp reads differently.

The inline switch on the cord turns it on and off, so nothing on the wall has to be wired to a switch.

NO ENTRY TABLE LAMP NEEDED

Mounted on the wall above an entry console, it lights the top from above and takes up no room on it.

The shade sends the light down onto the console top, and the wall is the only thing holding the lamp.

Common questions

Does it need wiring or an electrician?

No. The lamp takes its power from a standard wall outlet, so nothing connects to your house electrics. The round backplate still has to be fixed to the wall, which is the only work involved.

Is a bulb included, and which bulb fits?

No bulb comes with it. The socket takes an E26 or E27 base, and either an LED bulb or an Edison style bulb will fit, so you choose the one you want for the room.

How do I turn it on and off?

With the inline switch on the cord. It sits on the cord between the lamp and the plug, so the light goes on and off without reaching up to the fixture.

Which plug does it come with?

The lamp runs on AC 110 to 240 V and plugs into a wall outlet.

Can it go in a bathroom?

No. It is an indoor fixture rated IP20, which means it is not waterproof and is not suitable for a bathroom or any damp room.

Are the small pores and uneven edge a defect?

No. The shade is air dried and taken out of a mold by hand, so small pores in the surface and slight traces along the edges are characteristics of the material and the way it is made.

Which size should I choose?

Model A is the broad shallow one, 10.2 in (26 cm) across and 6.3 in (16 cm) high, which suits a wide wall above a console. Model B is the middle cone, 6.3 in (16 cm) across and 8.3 in (21 cm) high. Model D is the narrow taper, 2.8 in (7 cm) across and 16.5 in (42 cm) high, for a slim strip of wall.
