Navellir, a cone shade that swings out

A broad cone shade sits under a tall neck on Navellir, carried on an arm of two segments that pivot at each joint. The arm meets a slim rectangular backplate 2.4 in (6 cm) wide. Fold the arm in against the wall or swing it out over a chair, and the friction joints hold the position. The cone is open at the bottom, so the light goes down onto the book or the desk below. The metal is painted, with a silver toned arm and joints, and a cable runs from the backplate.

Where to put it

Beside the bed at reading height works well, with room for the arm to swing over the pillow. An armchair corner in a living room suits it too, and so does a home office desk or a hallway wall where nothing can stand on the floor.

How to install

This sconce fixes to the wall on a rectangular backplate, and a cable comes out of the backplate.

What you need: A bulb with a screw base.

Hold the sconce against the wall at the height you want, then swing the arm out to check that it clears the headboard, the chair back or the door.
Fix the rectangular backplate flat to the wall.
Fit a bulb with a screw base, up to 40 W equivalent. A warm white LED of 2700K to 3000K suits the way the cone throws light downward.
Plug the cord into a wall outlet.
Set the arm and the shade angle by hand, then switch the lamp on.

Good to know

The joints hold by friction, so move the arm by hand and do not force it past the point where it stops.
