Vanolire, a small cordless lamp for tables

A low circular base carries a tapered stem that flares out where the two meet, and a broad metal disc sits on top. Under that disc a pale band glows all the way round, dropping its light onto the stem and the table below. You work the lamp by touch. Tap through the brightness levels, or hold the control to adjust it. The light shifts from warm to cool white as well. It charges over USB and comes in gold, rose gold or silver.

Where to put it

Put it on a nightstand as a bedside light, where it stands free on whatever space is left. It gives a study desk its own light. In the evening it can stand in the middle of a dining table, and it suits a bar counter or an open shelf.

Here is how to charge the Vanolire, set it down and work its light from the touch control.

What you need: A USB power source to charge the lamp.

Charge the lamp by connecting it to a USB power source.
Stand it on a flat, stable surface such as a nightstand, a desk or the middle of a dining table.
Tap the touch control on the lamp to step the brightness through 25, 50 and 100 percent.
Press and hold the control to adjust the brightness further.
Use the same touch control to switch the light between warm 3000K, neutral 4000K and cool 6000K.

Every setting is made on the lamp itself, as there is no remote.
With no cord to unplug, you can carry it from a desk in the day to a dining table in the evening.

SWITCH THE LIGHT COLOR

The lamp has three light colors and you change them from the touch control on the lamp itself. Warm 3000K, neutral 4000K and cool white 6000K, with no remote to keep track of.

Cool white is the one for reading in bed or checking something close up. Warm is the one for the last hour of the evening, and the light comes from a band under the metal top rather than a bare bulb.

CARRY IT TO DINNER

The lamp stands on its own low circular base and runs on a rechargeable battery, so it can be lifted from a shelf and set down in the middle of a laid table. Nothing has to reach a socket and no cord crosses the cloth.
