Description

Vonelisa, a wood swing arm wall light

A broad pleated ceramic shade hangs from a twisted cord at the end of Vonelisa's jointed wood arm. The arm swings the shade out over the bed and folds it back again, pivoting above a narrow wall backplate. Light drops from the shade onto whatever sits below and washes more softly over the wall behind. You switch it with a twist knob on the gold colored socket, which takes a standard E26 bulb. It comes as a plug version or hardwired.

Where to put it

It works on a bedside wall where the arm can reach over the bed, or beside a reading chair in a living room. The backplate is narrow, so a hallway wall with no floor room for a lamp suits it too, as long as the arm can fold back clear of a door frame and the people walking past it.

Size and details

Type: Adjustable wall sconce with a jointed wood arm and a suspended ceramic shade
Sizes: Arm sections 12.2 in (31 cm) and 11.0 in (28 cm); ceramic shade 9.1 in (23 cm) across and 6.3 in (16 cm) tall with the brass socket
Backplate: Rectangular, 9.4 in (24 cm) high and 1.8 in (4.6 cm) wide
Material: Wood arm and backplate, ceramic shade, gold colored socket
Light source: E26 socket for an LED bulb
Control: Twist knob on the socket, on and off
Power: Two wiring options: US Plug or Hardwired
Mounting: Backplate fixed to the wall
Use: Indoor rooms: bedside, reading corners, hallways and living rooms

How to install

The sconce goes up through the rectangular backplate on its arm, and the wiring option you chose decides how it gets power.

What you need: A bulb for the socket.

Hold the sconce against the wall at the height you want and mark where the backplate sits. Beside a bed, the shade should hang below your eyes when you are sitting up.
Fix the backplate to the wall, keeping its long edge vertical.
Fit an E26 LED bulb into the socket above the shade.
For a plug version, run the cord to the outlet you plan to use. For the hardwired version, have an electrician make the connection to the house wiring.
Turn the knob on the socket to switch it on, then swing the arm out to where you want the light to land.

Good to know

The arm pivots, so check it can swing clear of a headboard or a door frame before you fix the backplate.
The bulb sits just below the rim of the shade, so pick one you do not mind seeing.

What makes it good

The arm carries the shade out over a book in bed and folds back to the wall.
Wall mounted, it gives bedside light without a lamp standing on the table.
The wide shade throws light down onto the bed or the armchair underneath, with a little spill on the wall behind.
The bulb you fit decides how bright and how warm the light reads.
The plug version goes up on any wall near an outlet, while the hardwired version suits a new bedside wall you are wiring anyway.

PLUG VERSION NEEDS NO CIRCUIT

The plug version takes its power from an ordinary outlet, so the sconce can go up on a plain stretch of hallway wall.

The plaster around it stays unbroken. The narrow backplate is what carries the arm, and the fasteners go through it into the wall.

REACHES OUT OVER THE BED

The arm pivots, so the shade travels out over the bed and folds back again without the fixture moving.

The wide shade puts the light down on the page, and the rest falls softly on the bed below.

READING CORNER WITHOUT EXTRA FURNITURE

Fixed to the wall beside an armchair, the sconce lights the seat while the floor around the chair stays clear of a lamp base and a table.

The backplate is narrow enough for a slim strip of wall beside the chair, and the arm carries the shade out over the seat when you want to read.

Common questions

Do I need an electrician to put it up?

That depends on the wiring option you pick. The plug version runs a cord to an outlet, so the sconce goes up without anything being done to your house wiring. The Hardwired version connects to the circuit behind the wall and is work for an electrician.

Which wiring option should I choose?

Pick US Plug for a standard outlet, or Hardwired if you would rather it was wired into the circuit behind the wall.

Which bulb does it take?

An E26 LED bulb. That is a common size, so the bulb is easy to find and easy to swap later if you want the room lit differently.

Do I need to buy a bulb?

Have a bulb ready for the day you fit it.

How do I switch it on and off?

There is a twist knob on the socket above the shade, so you switch the light at the fixture.

Does the arm really move?

Yes. The arm is jointed and swings, so the shade can come out over a book or fold back to the wall when nobody is reading. The two arm sections measure 12.2 in (31 cm) and 11.0 in (28 cm).

How does it fix to the wall?

Through the rectangular backplate at the base of the arm, which is 9.4 in (24 cm) high and 1.8 in (4.6 cm) wide. Because it is narrow, it fits beside a bed or a door frame.
